"IQFeed version 4 is a real screamer compared to anything else I have seen." - Comment from Tom
"I ran your IQFeed DDE vs. my broker vs. a level II window for some slow-moving options. I would see the level II quote change, then your feed update instantaneously. My broker's DDE, however, would take as much as 30 seconds to update. I am not chasing milliseconds, but half a minute is unacceptable." - Comment from Rob

lease provide your feedback regarding what OS's we should support in future versions of DTN.IQ (Internet and Satellite) as well as IQFeed.

Because Win2K and XP are so much better with thread and memory handling, we are considering supporting only Win2K + with future versions of our software. This means we would no longer support Win98, ME, or NT4. This would greatly increase performance on Win2K/XP systems, and would reduce the development time required to create enhancements.

Before we make a decision, we want to hear what you have to say!

You didn't offer the option, but Linux would be the most useful for me. (In case of "open source confusion," I hasten to add that you don't need to release source code -- executables that run under Linux would be ample.)

But in the context of your original question, I don't need '98, ME or NT4.

Given the choice I would use Linux above all the other choices for IQFeed.

But as far as the above choices Win2K is all I need.

Thanks,

JF

I would certainly chose Linux if you produced a client for it. At the moment all my software runs on Linux and I run a dedicated machine with a Windows OS, just for the IQFeed client.

I concur: Linux would be my preference.

Linux would be very beneficial--even if your software was just certified to run under on Linux under the WINE windows emulator (does anyone know if it will?) Since most effective use of the software seems to be using sockets, the COM stuff would not need to be ported.

I've gotten it working under Wine. It involved copying a handful of dlls out of my Windows partition, however. I don't think I got an actual install to work, but did it through copying the executable. It seemed to work without a lot of problems, using a program I had written in Visual Studio to access the data via TCP/IP.

Ultimately, I decided this was too much complexity such that, although I do all my development and run all my servers using Linux, I dedicate one machine running Win 2K to the IQFeed. This is not a happy solution for me, in addition to the fact that I have to reboot my machine anytime I want to do development.

To the DTN developers: don't take Wine as a reason to put Linux development on the backburner. I don't know anyone who considers Wine stable enough for production applications, and it is unknown when this will ever be the case. You should release a native client for Linux. Some folks are zealots for the open source thing, but I would be fine with a binary-only release, and I think many other people would be also.

I totally agree with radams.

I'm never going to run vista. This means any OS emulation is not a viable alternative because I don't even want to install that bloated hunk of junk on a computer. I will be using a Mac as my next main machine, but would happily run Linux on a separate machine for data services. Native clients for either OS would suit me just dandy.

Kind regards,
MK

I would NOT need any support for OS prior to Win 2K. Could you clarify whether you would eventually support VISTA? I currently don't think it makes sense for me to use it and don't expect that opinion to change for the next year or three, BUT I suspect it is more a question of when not if.

For what I do XP 64 bit and W3K probably makes more sense because I can access more memory and storport IO support.

This thread (in it's original intent) is essentially defunct (it has served it's original purpose). As you can see, it was originally posted 3 years ago.

IQFeed currently officially supports only versions of windows that Microsoft also supports. This currently means Win2k and forward (including vista). You can find Microsoft's support dates and policies (for all of thier products) at Microsoft's website here: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselect

With that said, I strongly encourage everyone to continue the discusssion that this thread has evolved to in the sense of "What operating environment would you prefer to use and why?" I simply wanted make sure everyone was aware of the date on this original thread.

Thanks, Steve. I had noticed the age of the thread when I re-started it, but as midknight had posted as recently as June, I just couldn't help myself.

I was perfectly serious about the Java comment. We use Interactive Brokers TWS as our trading platform with IQFeed for our data, and can run the TWS software (written entirely in Java) on my Macbook Pro, our Redhat Linux servers, our W2K servers and our XP workstations. The fact that the IQFeed software can only run on our Windoze boxes has severely impacted our flexibility in deployment of Production servers.

Java is ideal for OS-agnostic development and should be at the forefront of any discussion of this kind. We use it for all our server development, and have found it to be reliable, robust and faster (yes, faster!) than almost all alternatives. MS VB and C++ in particular are not enterprise-level tools.
